A smile is usually the first feature that people notice when they first meet you. Beautiful smiles are always noticed and usually have one common factor, which is teeth that are bright and healthy. But more than likely, the person with that bright, healthy smile works hard in maintaining those pearly whites. Teeth can stay healthy, even from daily wear and tear, if they are cared for properly. One of the biggest culprits for both oral health and tooth decay is the food that we eat. Who else was sad to learn that eating too much citrus food wears down your enamel?
Here’s a list of some good-for-you ADA approved food for dental health:
- Water: Um, duh. Water, especially when it is fluoridated water, is the best thing to drink to maintain your oral health. Fluoride helps make teeth more resistant to the acid attacks that can cause cavities.
- Dairy: Mostly if your stomach can handle it. Dairy products such as cheese and yogurt are low in sugar and pack full of protein and calcium.
- Protein: Phosphorus-rich food like meat, poultry, fish and eggs help strengthen your teeth.
- Fruits and Vegetables: They’re important for maintaining a balanced diet and the plus side is that they’re good for your teeth! Since they are high in water and fiber, they help balance the sugars they contain and help clean your teeth. Maybe we should start saying “an apple a day keeps the…oral hygiene at bay!
- Nuts: Nuts contain protein and minerals that are great for overall health. An added benefit: they are low in carbs, which means they don’t add to your risk of cavities. This is because tooth decay is produced from acid-producing bacteria that is activated by carbs. Chewing nuts also stimulates saliva production, which reduces the risk for tooth decay.
